Introduction:
Behavioral assessment is a method used in the field of psychology to observe, describe, explain, predict and sometimes correct behavior. Behavioral assessment can be useful in clinical, educational and corporate settings.
Test Description:
This scale was developed by Upinder Manisha Jain. The scale is used to measure Type A/B behavior patterns in the Indian context. It is presented in the form of a 5-point scale-strongly agree, agree, uncertain, disagree and strongly disagree. The scale has two parts-Form A and Form B. Form A consists of seventeen (17) items and Form B consists of sixteen (16) items which are a total -three (33) items. Form A is used to measure Type A and Form B Type B behavior patterns separately because if a person scores high on Type A, it does not mean that he is not having any characteristics of Type B personality. There is a possibility that along with Type A has some of the characteristics of Type B personality because most have some of the characteristics of both the personality types. words, their personalities are a mixture of Type A and Type B personalities. So, it is necessary to measure both the personality types separately, so that it could be determined how much of both the personality types a person is having. One may be oriented more towards a particular type but may have some characteristics of other types too. As for the reliability of the scale, the reliability coefficient of Form A has been found to be .54 and coincidently, for Form B also it has been found to be .54. The scale has high content validity, besides face validity. The validity for both the forms which have to be .73 (Dhar & Jain, 2001). Regarding the administration of the scale, the scale is self-administering. It can be administered in groups or individually. As there is no time limit for completing the scale, most respondents, however, take about 10 minutes to complete both the forms. The respondents are required to answer all the questions and there is no wrong answer to the statements. Scoring is done manually, hence there is no scoring key. Each statement is scored 5 for strongly agree, 4 for agree, 3 for uncertain, 2 for disagree and 1 for strongly disagree. The sum of the scores from Form A and Form B yields Type A score and Type B score respectively. It identifies individuals with two types of Personality Patterns—type A & B. On the basis of factor analysis six factors were identified in type A pattern—I. tenseness, II. impatience, III. restlessness, IV. achievement orientation, V. domineering, and a workaholic and five factors were identified in type B pattern—I. complacent, II. easy going, III. non-assertive, IV. relaxed and V. patient.
Purpose:
To find the behavior pattern of the subject, and classify it as Type A/B pattern.

Test Administration:
Procedure:
Firstly, the subject was greeted and the conversation was started. The subject was informed about the test, its relevance and was excited for the test as it was his first time giving this type of test. The subject was instructed as per the ABBPS manual and explained the procedure to approach the test. The Subject’s consent was requested and assured that the data obtained will remain confidential.
Testing:
The test was conducted on the office environment but on a more confined boundary to limit the outward interaction. The test was conducted on the office environment but on a more confined boundary to limit the outward interaction. While giving the test, the subject went smoothly on both sections. The subject enjoyed the Type B section compared to the Type A section.
Introspection:
After the testing was completed the subject was asked to share his experience. The subject had mixed feelings determining the exact scale on some of the questions. The subject said, “Some questions response depends on the mood and scenario I’m in and I am a little bit confused about the scaling”. After completing the test the subject said the questions were generalized so the answer might depend on my mood as well, I think if I am doing the same test again my result would be different even though the variation might be little.
Release:
The subject was excited about the result the instant he finished the assessment. The subject was released then with thanks and will receive the adjustment scoring later on. With the manual in hand, the score was calculated and the behavior pattern was distinguished after a while the assessment was completed and informed to the subject.
Result and Analysis/Interpretation
Obtained Score (Type A):
Factors | Normal Range | Obtained | Interpretation |
Tenseness | 9-15 | 12 | Normal |
Impatience | 6-10 | 6 | Normal |
Restlessness | 6-10 | 5 | Low |
Achievement orientation | 9-13 | 10 | Normal |
Domineering | 6-11 | 6 | Normal |
Workaholic | 3-7 | 3 | Normal |
Total | 46-60 | 42 | Low |
Table 6.1: Obtained Score Type-A ABBPS assessment
Interpretation
I. Tenseness: Normal
II. Impatience: Normal (Towards the lower end of the range) indicating more patience
III. Restlessness: Low (Not in a hurry, restful nature)
IV. Achievement orientation: Normal
V. Domineering: Normal (Towards the lower end, not dominating)
VI. Workaholic: Normal (Towards the lower end, do not take much work pressure)
In Type A the subject has Normal score on all of the factors except, Restlessness where the patient scored low. From the above scenario, the subject seemed to be less tensed, patient(impatience towards the lower end). Subject is easy going and of restful nature.
Obtained Score (Type B):
Factors | Normal Range | Obtained | Interpretation |
Complacent | 8-13 | 10 | Normal |
Easy going | 12-17 | 12 | Normal |
Non-assertive | 6-9 | 7 | Normal |
Relaxed | 7-12 | 8 | Normal |
Patience | 8-12 | 11 | Normal |
Total | 46-58 | 50 | Normal |
Table 6.2: Obtained Score ABBPS assessment
Note: The interpretation of the score is as per the ABBPS manual
Interpretation
I. Complacent: Normal (Self-satisfied)
II. Easy going: Normal
III. Non-assertive: Normal
IV. Relaxed: Normal
V. Patience.: Normal (Close to the upper range, more patience)
In Type B the subjects’s overall total score is normal indicating the subject shows type B behavior pattern. The subject is self satisfied and on the patience field scored quite high leading to more patience as reflected by the Type A factor as well.
Impression:
The subject seems to be more of the Type B behavior person. Even though only one score is low on Type A, other scores on Normal range also fall at the beginning of the range so ultimately leading to Low total score for Type A behavior.
