Self Motivation Test

Introduction:

Motivation is the desire to act in service of a goal. It’s the crucial element in setting and attaining one’s objectives—and research shows that people can influence their own levels of motivation and self-control.

Motivation can have many sources, and often people have multiple motives for engaging in any one behavior. Motivation might be extrinsic, whereby a person is inspired by outside forces—other people or events that transpire. Motivation can also be intrinsic, whereby the inspiration comes from within a person—the desire to improve at a certain activity. Intrinsic motivation tends to push people more forcefully, and the accomplishments are more fulfilling.

Self-motivation is encouraging yourself to continue making progress toward a goal even when it feels challenging. There are two main types of motivators: ‘intrinsic’ and ‘extrinsic’.

In their simplest form you can think about these two types of motivation as:

  • Intrinsic: To perform an action or task based on the expected or perceived satisfaction of performing the action or task. Intrinsic motivators include having fun, being interested and personal challenges.
  • Extrinsic: To perform an action or task in order to attain some sort of external reward, including money, power and good marks or grades.

Different people are motivated by different things and at different times in their lives. The same task may have more intrinsic motivators at certain times and more extrinsic motivators at others, and most tasks have a combination of the two types of motivation.

Test Description:

Test questionnaires used for this test are derived from Quest Meraki.  In this test, there are three questionnaires: the first one is to understand for the intrinsic or the extrinsic nature of the motivation on the subject, the second and third questionnaires are to know the subject’s self-motivation level on various dimensions such as personal drive, commitment, initiative, optimism, risk-taking, setting goals, self-efficacy, self-confidence, managing time and being organized.

The first questionnaire includes 12 statements and this is to find out the intrinsic or extrinsic motivation nature of the subject.  Each statement is ranked with 1 to 5 or 5 to 1 from ‘strongly agree’ to ‘strongly disagree’ in either case.  In the questionnaires second and third there are 38 and 42 statements respectively.  Those are to put a tick on the box of ‘Never’, ‘Rarely’, ‘Sometime’, ‘Often’ and ‘Always’ which will be  marked as ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’, ‘4’ and ‘5’ respectively.  The number of statements varies with the different dimensions.  Later on marks for each dimension are calculated summing up.  Score range is calculated with the higher possibility of each statement i.e. 5 by the number of statements and the lowest possibility of each statement i.e. 1 by the number of statements.  And with those highest possibility and lowest possibility, average value is calculated and obtained score is compared.  This will help to know the tendency of the subject on various dimensions of self-motivation..
